Abstract

905,139. Bearings. HOYT METAL CO. OF GREAT BRITAIN Ltd. Oct. 3, 1960 [Oct. 9, 1959; Nov. 6, 1959; Dec. 18, 1959], Nos. 35380/59, 37786/59 and 43031/59. Class 12 (1). [Also in Groups XVIII and XXXV] A method of protecting bearings from electrochemical attack resulting from the discharge of charged particulate contaminants in dielectric fluids comprises discharging the charge on such contaminants in a zone remote from the bearings. In an embodiment the oil is sprayed at a high velocity through a nozzle 4 so that it impinges on to an inclined face of an earthed metallic conductor 7 which is corrodable The conductor 7 is readily replaceable, being screwed to a plate 8 havone end pivoted about a pillar 5 and the other end clamped to a pillar 6. The pillars 5, 6 are attached to a base 1 which has external screwthreads engaging a tubular member 9 and internal screw-threads engaging a filter 3 and the nozzle 4. The oil, which is pumped through a hose 10 connected to the member 9, is passed through the process a number of times to remove the charge. An earthing terminal 2 is provided on the base 1 which, along with the other components, is made of bronze to resist corrosion. In other embodiments the charge is removed from the oil by absorbing the current in an electrolytic cell; by earthing the nozzle via the terminal 2; by providing a washer of high electrical conductivity which acts as a terminal, the oil first passing through the washer before entering the nozzle, the metal surfaces of which may be insulated from the oil.
