Abstract
1,158,247. Mercury and other conducting liquid switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 18 March, 1968 [19 April, 1967], No. 12598/68. Heading H1N. A change-of-state current limiter comprises a volume 60, Fig. 1, of liquid metal held under pressure between a pair of flat plates 15 with opposed mating grooves 42, Fig. 3, and having channels 19 for the liquid metal leading to reservoirs 64 containing resiliently loaded pistons 21 backed by neoprene rubber plugs 22 for taking up the increased volume when the metal vaporizes. The flat plate assembly 15 is lined with high density alumina 38 surrounding the liquid metal 60 and sealed by a neoprene washer 49 enclosed between a pair of fibreglass rings 17, 18 recessed in the assembly. Metallic headers 11, 12 containing the reservoirs 64 are clamped by bolts 13 having insulated sleeves 63, and washers 62 whereby the headers are electrically insulated from each other when the metal 60 vaporizes. Examples of suitable conducting liquid metals are mercury, gallium or indium or a mixture of mercury with 10 per cent or less of caesium, sodium, potassium or lithium. The arrangement is stated to be capable of sustaining an arc after a current surge of 50,000 amperes at 220 volts and reduces the flow to several hundred amperes and which may be interrupted by a normal circuit breaker.
