Abstract

Cross-linked polymers are produced by contacting a polymer cross-linkable by high energy radiation with gaseous vinyl chloride monomer and then subjecting the polymer to high energy particulate irradiation in the presence of gaseous vinyl chloride monomer. The polymer may be natural rubber, a butadiene polymer, a polymer of ethylene, propylene, butene-1, decene-1, or styrene or a copolymer of two or more 1-olefins. The particulate irradiation may consist of a beam of electrons, protons, neutrons, deutrons, alpha or beta particles, or may be generated within the treated material by irradiation with electromagnetic radiation such as X-rays or gamma rays. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 863,211.
