Abstract

The properties of shaped articles of filmforming polyethylene are improved by acting on the shaped article with energy-rich rays in the presence of 1 X 1018 to 7 X 1018 molecules per square centimetre of the surface of the shaped article of a gas reacting with polyethyllene and crosslinking the shaped article throughout its thickness. The gas may be oxygen, chlorine or fluorine and irradiation may be by high-energy electrons, gamma rays, neutrons, protons or energy-rich atomic nuclei.ALSO:The properties of shaped articles of film-forming polyethylene are improved by acting on the shaped article with energy-rich rays in the presence of 1 X 1018 to 7 X 1018 molecules per square centimetre of the surface of the shaped article of a gas reacting with polyethylene and cross-linking the shaped article throughout its entire thickness. The gas may be oxygen, chlorine or fluorine and irradiation may be by high-energy electrons, gamma rays, neutrons, protons or energy-rich atomic nuclei.
