Abstract

904,986. Coating webs. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. March 13, 1961 [May 5, 1960], No. 9162/61. Class 140. An apparatus for coating a web W of paper, cloth or metal, comprises an elongated chamber 6 having smooth curved upper inner walls leading to a narrow longitudinal orifice 5, an inlet to the chamber 6, and a coating pan 2 having upwardly-diverging walls 3, 4 whose bottom edges lie close to the orifice 5, and whose upper edges form a space adapted to receive a roller 1 which leads the web into contact with coating liquid 20 in the pan 2. The orifice 5 may comprise a continuous slot, or a row of elongated or circular holes. One wall 4 may be higher than the other wall 3, a trough 12 collecting overflow liquid for return by a pump 17 to the chamber 6, or the walls 3, 4 may be of equal height, a trough 12 encircling the pan 2. The pan 2 may be heated or cooled, e.g. by circulating a liquid through a jacket or by electric heating elements. An air knife 18, e.g. as described in Specification 855,164, doctors the coating 19. Two examples are described. In one a gelatino-silver iodobromide emulsion was coated on a cellulose acetate web; in the other, a silica-containing dispersion described in Specification 871,305 was coated on a polythene terephthalate base described in Specification 786,176.
