Abstract
In the production of nitrohumic acids by continuously passing a suspension of powdered coal in dilute nitric acid (5 to 40% by weight) through a series of at least three reaction vessels, each reaction vessel is maintained under normal pressure and at a temperature from 40 DEG to 100 DEG C. and the gases (containing nitric oxide) formed in each vessel are collected in a single pipe which leads to a nitric acid recovery system wherein the nitric oxide is oxidized by air or oxygen to form nitrogen peroxide, which is then reacted with water. The first reaction vessel is heated to initiate the reaction, the next vessel is cooled because the early stages of the reaction are exothermic, and the last vessels are heated to complete the reaction. The Specification is accompanied by a drawing which shows nine reaction vessels, joined in series by overflow means, each vessel being provided with an agitator and a reflux condenser. The exhaust ends of the individual condensers are all connected to a pipe which leads to the nitric acid recovery apparatus.ALSO:In the production of nitrohumic acids by continuously passing a suspension of powdered coal in dilute nitric acid (5 to 40% by weight) through a series of at least three reaction vessels, each reaction vessel is maintained under normal pressure and at a temperature from 40 DEG to 100 DEG C.
