Abstract

In a process for producing hydrogen containing gases from liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons, the starting material is converted to a gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen and possibly methane in a first exothermic stage at 1200 DEG to 1600 DEG C. with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas and with or without steam and/or carbon dioxide and wherein there is sprayed a solution of mixtures of salts of organic acids or alcoholates of elements of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Periodic Group with those of heavy metals of the 6th, 7th and 9th Periodic Group, in an amount such that 0,5 to 20,0 gms. of solid catalyst substance are used for each kgm of hydrocarbon to be converted, and the resulting gaseous mixture after a further addition of oxygen or oxygen-containing gas with or without steam and/or carbon dioxide is passed at 1000 DEG to 1500 DEG C. over combustion catalysts to remove soot from the gases produced in the first stage. The combustion catalysts are preferably pure or mixed oxidic compounds of elements of the 6th, 7th and 8th Periodic Groups and particularly CR2O3 supported in moulded bodies of a carrier having a porosity of 30-50% and so that 0,4 to 5% of the catalyst is present on the surface of the moulded bodies. The reaction in the first stage may be effected in a reaction vessel having walls made of zirconium silicate and may be carried out at a pressure of 5 to 20 atmospheres and in the presence of hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing gas preferably a portion of the gas produced in the second stage. The oxygen supplied to the process may be supplied as a liquid under pressure. Hydrogen may be recovered from the gas produced by cooling the gas to 340 DEG - 400 DEG C. and reacting the carbon monoxide with steam to form hydrogen and carbon dioxide, the carbon dioxide being then removed by washing. In an example the catalyst used is a 16% aqueous solution of calcium acetate, magnesium acetate and nickel acetate having CaO:Mgo:NiO:1:3:7.
