Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of the formula:- F-(-SO2-R)n where F is the residue of a nitro-dibenzanthrone or of an amino-dibenzanthrone or of a condensation product of an aminodibenzanthrone with a halogenated polycyclic ketone containing at least three fused benzene rings, and if desired, aminoanthraquinone, n is a number from 2 to 10 and R is a grouping -R1-W, -NH-R2-W, or <FORM:0904873/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 and R2 are carbon bridges containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms between -SO2- or -NH- and -W, W is a hydroxyl group esterified with an inorganic polybasic acid or a halogen atom, R4 is an alkylene radical of 1 to 5 carbon atoms or cycloalkylene, R6 is an alkylene radical with up to 3 carbon atoms between -R5- and -W, R5 is oxygen or sulphur or the group <FORM:0904873/IV (b)/2> , Y is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl or -R6-W, Z is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl or Y and Z together form an alkylene radical which, with the nitrogen atom, forms a heterocyclic ring and q is 0 or 1. Specified values for W are sulphate ester, phosphate ester, chlorine and bromine. The halogenated polycyclic ketone containing at least three fused benzene rings which forms a part of the condensation product with amino-dibenzanthrone may be derived from benzanthrone, anthraquinone, anthrone, anthanthrone, benzpyrenequinone or pyranthrone. The dyes are made by condensing dyestuff sulphochlorides, made by sulphochlorinating nitro-dibenzanthrone, aminodibenzanthrone or condensation products of aminodibenzanthrone and halogenated polycyclic ketones containing at least three fused benzene rings and, if desired, aminoanthraquinones or by treating sulphonic acids of these dyes with chloro-sulphonic acid and thionyl chloride, with o -haloalkylamines or the sulphate esters of alkanolamines or with alkanolamines followed by esterification with sulphuric acid, or by reducing the dyestuff sulphonic acids to sulphinic acids and reacting these with b -chlorethyl alcohol or ethylene oxide followed by esterification with sulphuric acid. Examples are given. The dyestuffs dye and print textile materials of natural or regenerated cellulose in conjunction with an acid-binding agent and a heat treatment, and also wool and silk in grey shades. Specification 887,588 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 733,471, 823,098, 830,847 and 867,546.
