Abstract

Fibrous materials of aromatic polyesters are dyed and printed using as dyestuff an anthraquinone free from solubilising acid groups and containing at most four fused rings and also an arylsulphonylamino group preferably attached in the a -position. Advantageously the dyestuffs also contain at least one auxochrome which may be a hydroxyl, amino, alkoxy or alkylmercapto group or a halogen atom or it may be a member of a fused heterocyclic ring. The arylsulphonyl residue may by substituted with, for example, halogen atoms or hydroxyl, lower alkoxy or alkyl groups. Of special interest are dyes of the formula <FORM:0917258/IV (b)/1> in which X is an amino or hydroxyl group, Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkoxy or alkylmercapto group and Z is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a hydroxyl, alkoxy or alkyl group. The alkyl and alkoxy groups preferably have 1-6 C atoms and may be substituted with hydroxy or alkoxy groups. Mixtures of the above dyes often exhibit better affinity than the single dyes. They may be prepared by reacting the appropriate amino-compound with an aryl-sulphochloride or by condensing an a -halogen-anthraquinone with an aryl-sulphonamide. Specified dyes are: 1-paratoluenesulphonylaminoanthraquinone, 1-chloro- 4-paratoluenesulphonylaminoanthraquinone, 1-hydroxy- 4-paratoluenesulphonylaminoanthraquinone, 1:4-dihydroxy- 5-paratoluenesulphonylaminoanthraquinone, 1-methoxy- 4-para-toluenesulphonylaminoanthraquinone, 1-amino-4-para-toluenesulphonylaminoanthraquinone, 1-methylamino- 4-benzene sulphonylaminoanthraquinone, 1- phenylamino-4- benzenesulphonylaminoanthraquinone, 1-amino- 2-methoxy- 4-para-toluene sulphonyl amino anthraquinone, 1-amino-2-methoxy-4-b -naphthalene sulphonylaminoanthraquinone, 1-amino- 2-(b -hydroxyethoxy)- 4-paratoluene sulphonylaminoanthraquinone, 1-amino-2-(b -methoxyethoxy)-4-benzene sulphonyl amino anthraquinone, 1-amino- 2-bromo- 4-benzene sulphonylaminoanthraquinone and 4- or 5-benzenesulphonylamino-1:9-isothiazoleanthrone. Dyeing may be effected with a fine dispersion of the dyestuff in the presence of a dispersing agent, e.g. N-benzylm -heptadecylbenzimidazole, and a carrier, e.g. ortho-hydroxydiphenyl, or without a carrier at superatmospheric pressure and a temperature of 120 DEG C., advantageously from a bath made weakly acid with acetic acid. Alternatively the material may be impregnated below 60 DEG C. with a liquor containing in addition, urea and an alginate and thereafter thermofixing at 180-210 DEG C. Mixed fabrics of polyester and cotton may be dyed or printed with the present dyestuffs together with a vat or reactive dyestuff in p the same bath.
