Abstract

<PICT:0904865/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0904865/IV(a)/2> Tubular films are produced by extruding a synthetic organic thermo-plastic material 1 through an annular extrusion orifice 3 in the extrusion head 2 (Fig. 1) to form a tube 4 which is drawn over a hollow mandrel 5 through which cooling water is circulated by means of tubes 6 and 7. The portion of the tube 4 between the extrusion orifice and the mandrel is inflated by means of a gas at superatmospheric pressure introduced through the tube 9. The diameter of the tube is thus increased sufficiently to enable it to be drawn without undue friction over the mandrel 5 whose diameter is greater than that of the extrusion orifice. The tube 4, cooled by its passage over the mandrel, but not yet solidified and hardened, is drawn from the mandrel and may thereby be reduced in diameter and just before leaving the mandrel or after leaving the mandrel is cooled by water discharged from the annular hollow member 12 through uniformly spaced spraying nozzles 11. The position of the member 12 is axially adjustable with respect to the mandrel so that the final internal diameter of the completely solidified tube or tubular film is equal to or less than the external diameter of the mandrel. The tube 4 may be drawn through a second cooling device 13 (Fig. 2) concentric with the tube by means of a drawing-off device comprising a cylindrical core 15 connected rigidly to the mandrel 5 by a bar 16 and provided with four rows of rollers 17 co-operating with the four rubberized driven endless conveyer belts 19.
