Abstract

<PICT:0843320/IV(a)/1> Tubular films are made by forcing a thermoplastic material at a first temperature high enough to keep the material plastic through an annular channel, and extruding the tubular film so formed under pressure and without changing its dimensions through an annular orifice, the surface of the film being subjected, without changing its dimensions, to a second temperature higher than the first temperature immediately before the film is forced out of the orifice. Preferably, the surface of the film is subjected to a second temperature 1-25%, especially 2-10%, higher than the first temperature for a period of 0,01-10 secs, especially 0,1 to 2 secs. Apparatus as shown comprises an extrusion head 1 having extrusion die means with successively arranged first and second portions communicating together, the first portion forming a tapered annular channel 4 and the second portion forming an annular surface with cylindrical walls 5 having heating means 8, 9, extending only immediately adjacent to the outlet of the orifice, for additionally heating the outermost end of the cylindrical walls to a temperature higher than that of the first portion. Interposed between the first and second portions may be a third portion having a smaller cross-sectional area than that of the first and second portions, (note grooves 10, 11, in parts 6, 7), whereby the flow of heat from the second portion to the first portion is limited.
