[Also in Group XXV] In a theft alarm for a box 1 or similar portable closed article, a control member 18 is adapted to occupy three positions, namely an inoperative position (Fig. 1), an alarm - setting position (Fig. 2), and an alarminitiating position (Fig. 3), the alarm signal remaining operative, when initiated, independently of any subsequent movement of the control member 18 (as shown, by the operation of a latch 39 on alarm contacts 25, 26); the control member 18 is held in its alarm-setting position as desired either by a deformable system (as shown, a coil spring 36 and a ball 30 loosely resting in a hole in the bottom of the box 1) sensitive to a displacement of the box 1 or similar article relative to the support 34 carrying it, or by a locking system 43, 45 (Fig. 7) which may be released at will from the outside of the box 1 or similar article. To set the alarm, a plate 6 is moved to the left by means of a key inserted through a keyhole 5, allowing the control member 18 to take up the position shown in Fig. 2, and the alarm, once started, may be stopped by returning the plate 6 to its initial position, thereby withdrawing the latch 39 from contacts 25, 26. If the plate 6 is moved to the right, catches 9 securing the lid 2 of the box 1 are released. The locking system 43, 45 may be retained in its released position by pulling the handle 45 and turning it through ninety degrees so that it rests in a groove 51.
