Abstract

904,584. Producing glass or silica tubes. MULLARD Ltd. Feb. 25, 1959, No. 6528/59. Class 56. To produce a tube from a tube having an internal perimeter not greater than that required in the finished tube, a mandrel having the required shape and dimensions is caused to travel through the tube to be shaped under the action of a constant or substantially constant driving force, such as is provided by weight loading, the tube being heated at the zone of engagement with the mandrel so that the heated zone travels along the tube as the mandrel progresses, the mandrel itself tapering from the shaping portion to a size fitting within the original bore of the tube, a current of a protecting gas being passed through the tube during the process in the direction of travel of the tube relatively to the mandrel which is apertured to permit passage of said gas. The upper part of one form of apparatus as shown in Fig. 2, a lower part in Fig. 3. The tube 31 being treated, is expanded by passage past a mandrel 14, a short enlarged portion being provided at the lower end to permit the initial entry of the mandrel. A weight in the form of a chuck is attached to this lower end. The mandrel is mounted on a wire 7 of refractory material attached to wires of less refractory material by an upper joint 11 and a lower joint, not shown, on which rests a spacer member 23, for example a silica tube, which supports a plug 19 on which the mandrel rests. Resting on the mandrel is a spacer 24, an apertured disc 25 and a tube 26 through which the protecting gas is fed from a side tube 27. The supporting wire for the mandrel is attached to an upper support 10 and carries a weight, not shown, at its bottom end. The tube 31 is heated in the vicinity of the mandrel by a burner which produces a ring of flame from a slit 39. This burner may be of the same general form as described in Specification 762,674. Gas is supplied through pipes 41 and cooling water through pipes 45. The couplings for the ends of the wire 7 are described in detail. Specification 640,878 also is referred to.
