Abstract

904,505. Cathode-ray tubes. HARRIES ELECTRONICS CORPORATION Ltd. Nov. 17, 1959 [Nov. 25, 1958], No. 37954/58. Class 39 (1). An electron gun includes an apertured shielding electrode 4, Fig. 1, an indirectly-heated cathode 1 of axially symmetrical shape and having a forward part 2 which projects through the aperture and is tapered towards its forward end. An initially diverging beam is emitted from the cathode forward part. The apertured end of shield 4, which is also the modulator, may be flat as shown or conical with a forward taper. The still-diverging beam passes through a first anode 9 and a second 10 to a beam-limiting aperture 13, the image of which is finally focused on phosphor screen 17a, Fig. 3, by the final electron lens as an extremely fine spot. The image on screen 17a is reflected by internal Schmidt mirror 20 through corrector plate 27 to final viewing screen 28. The screen 17a and a locating pin 23 are supported on spider arms 24, 25. During assembly, the cathode point is accurately centred in the shield aperture by a jig with adjusting screws which move the ceramic disc 5. The adjusted cathode-shield unit is then aligned with the remaining electrodes by mandrel 29, Fig. 5, and spacers 31, 32, 36, before supporting posts 15, Fig. 1, are finally sealed into four glass supporting arms 16. Mandrel 29 is rotatable on bearings 33, 34 and has a recess 44 to give room for the cathode point. Specification 897,359 is referred to.
