904,010. Drinking straws. YAT CHUEN YUEN. Dec. 7, 1960, No. 42079/60. Class 14 (2). In an assemblage of a container 10 of a beverage, a closure 11 therefor, and a drinking straw 12 normally held down in the container by the closure, the straw comprises a plurality of parts 12<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>2</SP> slidably mounted one on the other, one of the parts having an open end forming a mouthpiece. Projection of the straw from the container on removal of the closure 11 may be ensured by construction of the lower and upper parts 12<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>2</SP>, respectively of the straw in material of density less than that of the beverage, provision of a sealed, lighter-than-water ring on the lower or upper part, entrapping air in the oblique-ended upper part with a disc or a flanged plug which disc or plug becomes detached by the upward movement of the upper part on removal of the closure, release of a spring compressed in the lower part 12<SP>1</SP> and bearing against the upper part 12<SP>2</SP>, release of pressure on peripheral corrugations in the resilient material of which the lower part is made, or entrapping air in the lower part 12<SP>1</SP>.
