Abstract

<PICT:0903980/III/1> An apparatus for the underwater deposition of liquid bituminous material on the bottom of a waterway comprises a supply conduit provided at the end with at least one narrowed outlet nozzle, wherein the diameter of the largest circle that can be fitted within the cross-section perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle is smaller than the diameter of the largest circle that can be fitted within the cross-section perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of that part of the supply conduit without the nozzle, but the diameter of the largest circle that can be fitted within the cross-section of the nozzle is at least 5 cm., the length of the nozzle measured along the direction of flow is at least 3 times the diameter of the largest circle that can be fitted within the cross-section of the nozzle, but not more than one-fifth of the length of the supply conduit, including the nozzle, which during operation is situated beneath the surface of the water and #q2 tot \sE 0,6fO1 wherein #q2tot = the total cross-sectional area of the nozzle or nozzles perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle or nozzles; O1 = the cross-sectional area perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of that part of the supply conduit without the nozzle or nozzles; f = a shape factor. This factor is 1 when the outlet nozzle or nozzles has or have a circular cross-section, and is derived from the formula <FORM:0903980/III/1> when the nozzle or nozzles has or have a rectangular or square cross-section, h being the short and b the long side of the rectangle or h and b being the side of the square, or, when the nozzle or nozzles has or have other cross-sections, is derived from the definition: 1/f = the quotient of the quantity of water at 15 DEG C. passing under the influence of a pressure gradient causing laminar flow conditions through a nozzle of the relevant dimensions, and the quantity of water at 15 DEG C. passing under the influence of the same pressure gradient causing laminar flow conditions through a circular nozzle having the same cross-sectional area. As shown, as the supply conduit 1 is moved along as indicated by arrow 6, so that the narrowed outlet nozzle 3 is close to the bottom 7 of the waterway the liquid bituminous material, fed into supply conduit 1 through funnel 2, flows from the nozzle 3 to form a dense coating layer 9 on the bottom 7.
