903,875. Change-speed gear. BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE A.G. Nov. 24, 1958 [Nov. 23, 1957], No. 37805/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] Gearing for a motor vehicle comprises a casing 6 having a space 3 for a main clutch from which a driven shaft 31 passes through a space 4 containing a bevel gear differential 9, gears 34 ... 37 fast upon the shaft and within a removable change-speed gear casing 2 meshing gears 46 ... 49 selectively coupled to a driven shaft 18 by slidable clutch sleeves 50, 51, a bevel gear 7 upon the driven shaft meshing the crown wheel 8 of the differential, a wall 14 separating the differential housing 4 from the change-speed gear casing 2 and supporting the end bearings 19, 32 of the change-speed gear shafts together with the ends of selector rods 21 . . . 23 slidden axially to establish the different ratios. Reverse is established by sliding an idle gear 58 into mesh with a gear 38 integral with the shaft 31 and with a gear 52 formed on the periphery of the clutch sleeve 51. When assembling the gear, the driven gear shaft 18 is first placed in the differential casing 1 to ascertain the size of a spacer 44 required between the back of the bevel pinion 7 and the adjacent face of the inner race of the bearing 19. The shaft 18 is then taken out, the spacer 44 and the other parts carried by the shaft are placed in position, and a nut 56, securing a speedometer drive gear 54, locks the whole together. The driving gear shaft 31 is now provided with its bearings 32, 39, &c. The bearings 19, 32 of the two shafts 18, 31 are next located in the wall 14 separating the differential housing 4 from the change-speed gear casing 2. Finally, the selector rods 21 ... 23, the reverse idler 58 &c., are inserted and the change-speed gear casing 2 secured in position by bolts 17 and dowels 16. A side cover 64 carrying a slidable and rotatable ratio selector rod 62 is secured last of all. The selector mechanism comprises a finger 63<SP>1</SP>, secured upon the slidable and turnable ratio control-rod 62, engageable in slots 21<SP>1</SP>, 221 in the selector rods 21, 22, respectively, and in the forked end 29<SP>1</SP> of a lever 29 pivoted upon a support 30 carried by the wall 14 to actuate at its remote end a striker fork 61 upon the selector rod 23. The selector rods 21, 22 and their associated selector forks 59, 60 control the forward ratio clutch sleeves 50, 51, while the selector fork 61 controls the reverse idler 58. The selecting finger 63 and the rod 62 are guided angularly by a tooth segment 65 engaging a pin 66 in the side housing 64. The selector rods 21 ... 23 are interlocked by the usual drift pins, Fig. 5 (not shown), located within the wall 14 separating the differential and the gear housings 4, 2. Spring-biased ball detents 20 hold the selector rods in the ratio established positions. A screw cap 67 is provided in the side housings 64 for filling and gauging the quantity of oil in the gear case 1, and a drain cap 67<SP>1</SP> is provided at the end of the gear case. The differential gearing 9 is reached through a detachable cover 10.
