Abstract

Self-sustaining chemical reactions, e.g. the thermit process and the extraction of metallic uranium from uranium tetrafluoride, are initiated by igniting a portion of the reaction mixture at a distance from the main body of said mixture and projecting said portion into said main body of reaction mixture. A quantity of a peroxide of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal may be added to the portion of reaction mixture. The apparatus may comprise a cartridge (1) mounted on a wall (17) of the reaction vessel and a striker (9) also mounted on said wall and adapted to strike a percussion cap (2) of the cartridge which contains a portion (3) of the reaction mixture. The <PICT:0903803/III/1> <PICT:0903803/III/2> numerals refer to Figs. 1 and 2, in which the main body of reaction mixture is confined in a crucible 16 within a furnace 17 which can be exhausted through line 18 and to which argon can be admitted through line 19. A deflector 21 is provided to prevent material splashing into the space between the crucible and the bell. The initiating device is mounted on a tube 6 leading into the reactor and comprises a support 4 for the cartridge case and a support 5 for the percussion mechanism fixed to said tube by means of cap nut 7. The striker 9 is loaded by means of spring 11 and held in the cocked position by means of spring loaded pin 12 which engages in a recess in said striker.
