Articles are positioned on a conveyer by two arms pivoted about the same or parallel axes and movable by cam means operated by a member movable in a direction parallel to the axis or axes from an inoperative position out of contact with an article to a position in which they contact and position the article, means being provided for returning the arms to inoperative position on return of the member. As shown, in apparatus for crimping pies contained in tins 1 and in which the tins are moved step-by-step up to a crimping head (not shown) by an endless conveying member 2 having pushers 3 and driven intermittently, each tin is positioned below the crimping head by two arms 4 pivoted at 5 which are caused to swing out from retracted positions at one side of the Conveyer to positions in which they engage the tin and, in conjunction with a fixed abutment 21, locate the tin in desired position. Each arm has a radial portion 6 and an arcuate portion 7 which carries a block 8 in which is threaded an adjusting-screw 9. The abutment 21 is also adjustable. The arms 5 are normally held in retracted positions by a spring 17 and are swung out by the downward movement of the crimping head acting through a crosshead 11 on a rod 12 provided with cams 13 which engage surfaces 19 on the arms. Each cam has an inclined face 15 to effect the swinging of the arms and a vertical face 14 which holds the arms in operative position during the actual crimping operation.
