[Also in Groups XVII and XXXII] Pairs of bricks 14 are transferred by grippers 15 from separating station 13, as described in Specification 781,264, and are deposited in successive rows on an endless conveyer composed of a series of inverted U-section slats 21 secured between a pair of endless chains so as to leave spaces between adjacent slats adapted to accommodate fingers 19 of a fork-lift device 18 positioned at the discharge end of the conveyer. The arrangement is such that a row of brick pairs is received on each slat with the ends of the bricks overhanging the spaces between the slats. At the discharge end of the conveyer a consignment composed of five rows of brick pairs is transferred from the conveyer to a drier car or pallet 29 by first moving the fingers 19 of the fork-lift device horizontally into the spaces between the slats 21, then raising the fingers 19 to lift the consignment by engagement of the fingers 19 with the ends of the bricks up to the level of a desired rack of the drier car, and then again moving the fingers 19 horizontally to deposit the consignment on the drier car. The vertical movement of the fingers 19 is effected by a screw (Fig. 3, not shown) while the first and second horizontal movements of the fingers are effected by two fluid-pressure cylinders 27, 28, respectively. The drier car 29 which may be . used as a pallet by the provision in its base of openings to accommodate the forks of a forklift truck has racks 29a, 29b &c. each composed of slats 211 spaced to provide openings between them by which the fingers 19 may be withdrawn after the depositing of a consignment.
