Abstract
903,163. Photo-electric control of electrostatic precipitators. RESEARCH-COTTRELL Inc. March 6, 1961 [March 15, 1960], No. 8040/61. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XL (a)] In an electrostatic precipitator, the dust density at the dirty gas inlet 12 is sensed by a photo-electric cell 48, and the signal therefrom is used to control the intensity or frequency of operation of electromagnetically-operated rappers 24, 26 associated one with each of a pair of electrode assemblies 16, 18. As shown, the photo-electric cell signal is fed into a differential amplifier 50 which is fed also with a reference signal from a source 54, and the amplifier output controls a reversible motor 58 which adjusts the movable contact 40 of an auto-transformer feeding the power unit 28 which energizes the rappers 24, 26. In an alternative arrangement, a further photo-electric cell may be sited at the gas outlet 14 and the signals from the two cells integrated before being fed to the differential amplifier. In further arrangements, the auto-transformer may be located in a rapping timing circuit so that the rapping cycle may be controlled.
