Abstract
902,910. Skylight opening and closing apparatus; ventilators. JACET CHEMICAL CO. Inc. Nov. 20, 1958, No. 37423/58. Classes 20 (3) and 137. A pivoted dome-shaped skylight 9 is provided with a spring arrangement adjacent the hinge for continuously biasing the skylight to an open position and with a lever linkage system adapted to lock the skylight in a number of different positions. In one form, Fig. 1, two leaf springs 28, 29 are secured at one end to each other and to the ends of a similar pair of springs, the connected ends of the four springs being parallel, while the free ends of each pair are fitted in a sleeve 37 and slot 38 on the skylight structure 11 and frame 8 respectively. In the closed position as shown, the free end of spring 28 is twisted through 90 degrees, so that when the skylight is released the torque tension in the spring causes the skylight to open until the springs are parallel throughout their length. In a modification, Fig. 4, two resilient steel springs 107 are bent around the pivot rod 103 connecting the skylight 101 and frame 100, one limb 108 of each spring having a bend 109. Release of the skylight closure causes the springs to assume the untensioned position as shown. In both embodiments the skylight may be locked in several positions by means of the lever linkage system and notched plate shown in Fig. 1. A plate 41 with notches 43 at its forward edge is riveted to a sidewall 1b of the curb frame. An angled lever arm 48 is pivotally secured at 46 to the plate 41 and has a twisted lever arm 49 pivoted to its free end, the other end of the lever 49 being fixed to the skylight at 52. The skylight is held in a selected locked position by a spring-pressed pawl 61 engaging in any one of the notches 43. The pawl 61 is pivoted at 62 to the lever arm 48 and is releasable from the locked position by movement of a rod 59 linking the pawl and a plate 56 pivoted adjacent the other end of the lever 48; such movement is effected by pulling downwardly on a cord 70 against the action of a spring 67.
