A process for improving photographic tonal reproductions in silver halide emulsions by the combination of two exposures comprises making an image-forming non-diffused exposure and a diffused non-image-forming exposure under the following conditions, namely that (i) the imageforming non-diffused exposure is either an exposure having a duration of 1/100 sec. or less or in the combination of a short exposure having a duration of 1/100 sec. or less and an exposure of lower intensity and lasting at least 100 times the duration of the short exposure; and (ii) the diffused non-image-forming exposure is of lower intensity than the short image-forming exposure and is of a duration of 1/100 sec. or more. Preferably the exposure time of the short imageforming exposure is shorter than the exposure time of the diffused non-image-forming exposure by at least the factor of 10, and the exposure quantity of the diffused exposure is such that when used alone, it does not produce any photographic image density after the conventional processing of the photographic material.
