Abstract

Surgical gut, especially in the form of sutures, consisting of natural or regenerated collagen, is dyed blue to render it readily discernible in surgery, by vatting with indigotin, while maintaining the gut under slight tension, and then oxidising, e.g., with hydrogen peroxide. The vat is preferably prepared with sodium hydrosulphite and caustic soda. After oxidation the gut is preferably treated with an acetate buffer solution, washed, air-dried under slight tension, dehydrated by heating gradually up to a temperature of 100 DEG C., set by heating in a naphtha bath at 310 DEG F. and finally rinsed in isopropyl alcohol.ALSO:Surgical gut sutures of natural or regenerated collagen are dyed blue (see Group IV (c)), to render them readily discernible in surgery, by means of indigotin, after which they are oxidized and set.
