Abstract

Benzonitrile derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0902586/IV (b)/1> wherein R is hydrogen or an alkali metal, preferably sodium or potassium, or an acyl or phenyl group or an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms, preferably a methyl group, which alkyl group may be substituted by a carboxyl group or alkoxy carbonyl group; X is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a group OR1 wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom an alkali metal atom, or an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms or an acyl group; Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a cyano group, are prepared by treating the correspondingly substituted 3-hydroxybenzaldoxime or 3-acetoxybenzaldoxime of formula <FORM:0902586/IV (b)/2> wherein X represents a hydrogen or halogen atom and Y represents a halogen atom, the halogen being chlorine or bromine, and R represents a hydrogen atom or an acetyl group, with a dehydrating agent which will remove the elements of water from the aldoxime group. Suitable dehydrating agents are acid chlorides or acid anhydrides, especially acetyl chloride and acetic anhydride. Preferably the aldoxime and the acid chloride or acid anhydride preferably in excess, are heated together under reflux. Specified preparations are given of 3-acetoxy-2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile, 3-hydroxy-2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile, 2-chloro-3-acetoxybenzonitrile and 2-chloro-3-hydroxybenzonitrile. Specifications 772,193 and 898,915 are referred to.ALSO:A herbicidal composition comprises a benzonitrile derivative having the general formula <FORM:0902586/VI/1> wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal preferably sodium or potassium, an acyl group, a phenyl group or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms which may be substituted by a carboxyl group or by an alkoxycarbonyl group; X represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or the group OR1, wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal preferably sodium or potassium, an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms or an acyl group; Y represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a cyano group; Z represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or an alkoxy group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or Z and OR together represent a methylene dioxy group <FORM:0902586/VI/2> together with a solid carrier, or a surface-active agent, or a solid or liquid carrier and a surfaceactive agent, or a petroleum hydrocarbon fraction having a flash point above 73 DEG F., e.g. a refined aromatic extract of kerosene boiling in the range 145-290 DEG C. The acyl groups may be derived from an aliphatic carboxylic acid of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. acetic acid. The composition may be formulated as a dust, e.g. with finely divided solid carriers or wettable powder utilizing a dispersing or defluoculating agent. Specifications 772,193 and 898,915 are referred to.
