Abstract
The invention comprises hydroxyxanthones of the formula: <FORM:0923132/IV(a)/1> wherein X is a hydrogen or halogen atom, R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical which may bear a dialkylamino or alkyleneimino radical, the nitrogen atom of the imino group being a member of a heterocyclic nucleus and the alkylene residue may contain a straight or branched carbon chain and the preparation thereof by condensing a hydroxyxanthone of the general formula <FORM:0923132/IV(a)/2> with a haloalkane carboxylic acid or an ester of the general formula Hal.alkylene. COO.R, or by saponifying the xanthonecarboxyalkyl ether alkyl ester which is primarily formed to yield the corresponding carboxylic acid and/or by treating the latter with an alkylating agent containing an alkyl residue substituted by a dialkylamino or alkylene-imino radical.
