Abstract

902,269. Valves. SINGER, E. Jan. 27, 1959 [Feb. 6, 1958], No. 3996/58. Class 135. A pressure-regulating valve comprises a casing 12, Figs. 2 and 3, containing spaced substantially parallel diaphragms 50, 51 dividing the casing into three chambers, adjustable loading means 69 between the diaphragms and means, such as an insert 35 for preventing movement of all but the central portion of diaphragm 51 towards and away from a seating 26 surrounding an inlet passage, the space 76 being connected to the outlet. In operation, the adjustable loading means, which may comprise a spring beam 69 supported at 71 and an adjustable abutment 42, acts through a push-plate 55 to lift the upper diaphragm 51 while pressure fluid passes from the inlet 91 through passage 78 to chamber 74 to act on the upper side of diaphragm 51 and through pusher 53, on central portion of diaphragm 50 to regulate the outlet pressure. A pressure gauge 89 on top of the casing may be replaced by a screwed member 87 which can be used for holding the valve closed or limiting its maximum opening. The diaphragms 50, 51 may be turned over to close the passage 78 and the chamber 74 be connected to the valve outlet by a pipe screwed into the hole for the member 87. In Fig. 6, the valve has a manually-actuated shut-off spindle 106 mounted in a gland 107 and a U-shaped spring bar 104 provides the loading means, while in Fig. 9, the loading means is formed by a short spring bar 127 bearing against a ridge 67 on pusher 53 and a ridge 129 on the insert 35. The setting of the valve may be varied by connecting the space between the diaphragms through a control valve to a source of air under pressure, an O-ring being fitted between the insert 35 and the pusher 53. Fig. 13 shows a pair of valves 10a, 10b with common inlet and outlet connections 167, 180 and which are set to open at different pressures so that only one valve lifts during periods of little demand. A spring bar similar to that of Fig. 2 may be used as the loading means, one end of the bar extending through a hole in an axially adjustable bolt for adjustment of the regulated pressure.
