Abstract

902,217. Reciprocating pumps. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. March 7, 1960 [Jan. 28, 1959], No. 2998/59. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXXII] A hydraulic pump supplying pressure liquid, e.g., to a ram in a road vehicle spring suspension system, comprises a pump body 10, Fig. 2, formed with a reservoir 12 and a bore 18 fitted with a screw-threaded sleeve 22 reciprocably mounting a pump plunger 24. The plunger 24 urged by a spring 28 into engagement with a cam 26 fixed on a spindle 14 oscillatable by a lever 16 is formed with a passage controlled by a ball valve 34 which opens on upward movement of the plunger. A ball valve 44 opens on downward movement of the plunger to deliver liquid into a conduit 50 connected to the ram cylinder. In another bore 20, a further screw-threaded sleeve 54 mounts a plunger 64 engaging a ball release valve 58 and urged by a spring 68 into engagement with a further cam 66 fixed to the spindle 14. The cams 26, 66 are arranged on the spindle 14 so that pressure liquid is -either supplied to or exhausted from the ram cylinder depending on the loading of the vehicle to maintain the vehicle in the same position relative to the ground. An overpressure valve fitted in a passage between the conduit 50 and the reservoir prevents the occurrence of hydraulic lock. In another embodiment, a pair of pump plungers 24, Fig. 4, are mounted side-by-side in bores 19 and co-operate with a single cam 27 fixed to the shaft 14. The valve 58 and its plunger 64 are replaced by a valve 82, Fig. 5, having a fluted stem 90 engaging a face cam 92 fixed to the spindle 14. Specification 867,514 is referred to.
