Abstract

907,026. Reciprocating pumps. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. Feb. 1, 1960 [Feb. 12, 1959], No. 4870/59. Class 102 (1). [Also in Group XXXII]. A pump for use in a hydraulic system to operate a displaceable member such as a ram in a vehicular suspension system, comprises a pump body 10, Fig. 4, formed with a reservoir 15, connected if desired by a union 17 to a further reservoir 16, Fig. 1, and parallel pumping bores 12 mounting bucket pistons 60 fitted with bucket valves 68. Rods 62 and a crank-plate 64 connect the pistons to a shaft 20 oscillated by movement of the vehicle suspension spring. The shaft 20 is provided with cams 48, 50 actuating valves 56, 58 fitted respectively in a line 44 connecting the pump delivery line 24 to the ram cylinder and a line 46 connecting the ram cylinder to the reservoir. A hydraulic pressure accumulator 26 comprising an elastic diaphragm 40 is connected to the line 24. To prevent overpressure in the accumulator a pressure relief valve 34 is fitted in a line between the line 24 and the reservoir or alternatively to absorb shock loads in the pump, valves 32 constituting damping valves are fitted in ducts 30 Interconnecting the delivery ends of the pump bores. These latter valves in a practical construction comprise a spring-loaded, hollow valve member 114, Fig. 4 seatable on a plug 106 and a spring-loaded valve member 110 seatable on the valve member 114. In a modified construction, bucket pistons 60 are replaced by pistons 128, Fig. 7 reciprocable in lines 126 fitted with loose-ball bucket valves 138 and loose-ball delivery valves 148. The pistons are operable by a cam 130 fixed to the shaft 20. On movement of the shaft 20 through a lever connected to the vehicle suspension spring, the pump pistons are actuated and at the same time one or other of the valves, 56, 58 is unseated to either raise or lower the ram in dependence upon theattitude of the spring relative to the vehicle frame, in order to compensate changes in load and maintain the vehicle at a desired mean riding height.
