Abstract
1374548 Tandem axle suspensions LIEBHERR-WERK EHINGEN GmbH 8 Feb 1973 [25 Feb 1972] 6225/73 Heading B7D [Also in Division F2] A tandem axle suspension for a mobile crane comprises two bell-crank levers 6 each of which at a first point 14 bears on a respective axle 4, at a second point 9 is pivotally connected to a frame cross-member 2, and at a third point 12 is connected to the corresponding point on the other lever 6 by a resilient suspension assembly including a spring 13 interposed between respective seats 17 on a piston-rod 19 and a cylinder 21, the piston-rod 19 being connected to a main piston 20 within the cylinder 21, two annular pistons 22 being axially slidable on the pistonrod 19 within the cylinder 21 on each side of the main piston 20, and the cylinder 21 having an internal collar 23 against which the annular pistons 22 are movable to trap the main piston between them and lock the main piston relative to the cylinder so that the interconnection between the levers can be made rigid during lifting operations. The collar 23 encircles the piston 20 with only a small amount of clearance so that flow of hydraulic fluid past the piston is restricted to provide damping, non-return valves 35 permitting increased flow during inward displacement of the piston. To lock the piston 20, pressure fluid is admitted to spaces behind the annular pistons 22 through passages 24, 25 and exhausted from the space between the pistons 22 through a passage 26, the passages 25, 26 being connected to a fluid pressure source and a fluid reservoir respectively through a lock valve 27 by means of which a fixed volume of fluid can be trapped in the spaces behind the pistons 22 and/or the space between them. As shown the axles 4 are connected to the crossmember 2 by pairs of rods 15 forming parallelogram linkages, whereas in another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the levers 6 are pivotally connected to the axles to replace the lower ones of the pairs of rods 15. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the peripheral surfaces of the main piston and of the internal collar in the cylinder are tapered to provide progressive damping and no non- return valves are provided in the piston.
