Abstract
Halopregnanes of the general formula:-<FORM:0902028/IV (b)/1> and also the corresponding 1-dehydro compounds (wherein R1, R2 and R3 represent hydrogen or a free or esterified hydroxyl, R4 represents hydrogen or a methyl group, X is a chlorine or fluorine atom, and Y is an oxo group, or hydrogen and a free or esterified hydroxyl group in a - or b -position) are prepared by subjecting the corresponding 11-methylene (i.e. 11-unsubstituted) compounds to the aerobic action of enzymes produced by micro-organisms of the order Mucorales (including Cunninghamella and Rhizopus), the class Actinomycetes and the genera Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Curvularia, or animal supra-renal glands, and in resulting compounds if desired, esterifying hydroxyl groups or oxidising the introduced 11-hydroxyl group to an 11-keto group. Preferred organisms are Rhizopus nigricans, Curvularia lunata, Cunninghamella blakesleana, C. bainieri, C. elegans, or C. echinulata, and the process is illustrated by fifteen detailed examples.
