Abstract

901,789. Fuel briquettes. STAMICARBON N.V. Feb. 18, 1960 [Feb. 20, 1959; April 22, 1959], No. 5868/60. Class 50. A fuel briquette comprises a solid particulate fuel and as a binder a polymer of an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon or a mixture of two or more such polymers. Suitable polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutyrene, polystyrene, and copolymers of ethylene and propylene or butylene, propylene and butylene and butadiene and styrene. The polymer may be added to the fuel particles in the form of a fine powder, a solution or a suspension and in an amount up to 4% and preferably between 1 and 2% by weight of the fuel particles. The fuel briquetted preferably has a content of volatile matter less than 14% by weight and may suitably be a mixture of low- and mediumvolatile coals. The fuel particles are preferably smaller than 3 mm. and with 50% > 1 mm. and 90% > 0.1 mm. When the polymer is added to the fuel to be briquetted in particle form the mixture is heated to e.g. 220‹ C. when the polymer is polyethylene and then compressed. When the polymer is added to the fuel to be briquetted as a solution, e.g. polystyrene dissolved in benzene, toluene or xylene, the mixture is cold compressed and subsequently heated in a current of hot air to recover the solvent. Polystyrene may also be added to the fuel to be briquetted as a suspension, preferably after the fuel has been mixed with a quantity not exceeding 5% by weight of the fuel of a tar-oil distillate. The amount of tar-oil distillate preferably does not exceed 3% by weight of the fuel and may suitably be the fractions distilling at 140- 200‹ C. or 230-300‹ C.
