Abstract

901,711. Re-cycling exhausts; charge pumps; regulating. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG A.G. Oct. 1, 1958 [Oct. 2, 1957], No. 31392/58. Classes 7(2) and 7(6) Re-cycling of exhaust gases via a pipe 6, from the exhaust pipe 3a to the intake pipe 2a of an engine 1 having extraneous ignition, is continuously controlled in dependency on, and in direct relationship to, the proportion of obnoxious constituents in the gases, by a valve 7 operated by a device 8 which may be responsive to the heat of the gases or to their carbon monoxide content as measured by an electrical resistance method using a Wheatstone bridge. Re-cycling is greatest at engine braking or starting and is decreased as engine speed increases. The device 8 may operate the valve 7 via a compressed air or oil servomotor or an electrical relay, and may have an indicating device associated therewith. The pipe 6 may be connected to a silencer 5 or directly to the pipe 3a, when the valve 7 may be located in the pipe 6, at its junction with the pipe 2a or 3a, or in the pipe 3a. The gases may be re-cycled in an injector-like manner, or as part of a pressure wave supercharging system. The engine has an air intake filter 4 and operates with fuel introduced, during the suction stroke and/or at the start of the compression stroke, by a carburetter 9 or by injection either together with the induced air or directly into the combustion chamber. The pipe 6 may have a wire screen spark extinguisher. Provision may be made to increase re-cycling under town driving conditions until the engine output is decreased to 30% of its maximum. There may be water injection to the pipe 6 or 2a.
