Abstract

901,358. Slub catchers; thread guides and tensioners; waxing threads. MARSHALL, C. R. May 23, 1960 [May 29, 1959], No. 18043/60. Classes 120 (2) and 120 (3). In catching slubs &c., a thread is pulled through a restricted passageway ; when a slub occurs the thread is deflected out of the passageway into an open air-space and the slub is arrested and the thread severed. In the apparatus shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, the thread is pulled through a slot A in an inclined deflector-member 45 between guides 37, 41; the slot is just wide enough to take the thread so that when a slub occurs the thread is deflected to pass through a second slot B in an entrapping-member 46 where the slub is arrested and the thread severed either by increased tension or by a knife. Lint &c. wiped from the thread at 45 is usually dispersed due to the inclination of the member and any collecting is carried on by the slub and falls between members 45 and 46. The path of the thread may be inclined at 10 degrees and the members respectively inclined at between 35-45 degrees and 25-35 degrees. The members need not be vertically arranged, but the lower part of 46 should be in a plane extending from the upper edge of member 45 to guide 41. The width of the slots may be adjustable and converging. In Fig. 6, members 45, 46 are carried by a support 20, each member consisting of two plates, one of which is adjustably mounted to vary the size and convergency of the slot. Member 45 is carried on an inclined part 60 of the support and one of its constituent plates is spring-urged towards the other ; member 46 is carried on a bracket 75 adjustable by screws 83, 84 in part 60. Support 20 also carries guides 37, 41 in plates 40, 43 shaped to facilitate threading, a guide-rod 25 carrying a guide-plate 31 and a double-disc tensioner 36 loaded by weights 55. The member 46 may carry a knife 111, Fig. 9, not shown, and a waxing-disc may be arranged beyond it in the support in which case the guide 41 may be carried by bracket 75 and a further guide is provided on the outlet side of the support.
