Abstract
Carpet yarn, containing at least 25% by weight of regenerated cellulose, is impregnated, either before or after incorporation in a carpet, with a solution containing a protein, a hardening agent for the protein, and a humectant. An improved handle is thereby imparted to the yarn or carpet, and other properties, such as resilience, and resistance to soiling and abrasion, may be improved. A preferred protein is gelatin, and specified hardening agents are formaldehyde, glyoxal, sodium cyanate, aluminium or chromium salts and polyepoxides. Ethylene glycol, glycerin or aqueous calcium chloride may be used as humectants. Other yarn-treating agents, such as colloidal silicones or wax emulsions may be incorporated in the impregnating solution. The quantity of solution applied may be such as to deposit 0.01-5.0% by weight of protein on the fibres. Examples of typical treating solutions are given.ALSO:An impregnating solution for carpet yarn comprises a protein, a hardening agent for the protein, and a humectant. A preferred protein is gelatin, while specified hardening agents are formaldehyde, glyoxal, sodium cyanate, aluminium or chromium salts and polyepoxides. Ethylene glycol, glycerin aqueous calcium chloride or wetting agents may be used as humectants. A typical solution may include colloidal silicones or wax emulsions and is prepared by adding 1/2 to 1 1/2 cc of a 40% formaldehyde solution and 0,3 to 0,8 cc of ethylene glycol to 100 cc of a 0,4 to 0,5% w/v aqueous gelatin solution.
