Abstract

900,880. Preparation of paper pulp. CHITTENDEN, A. E. Feb. 3, 1961 [Feb. 3, 1960], No. 3892/60. Class 96. A cold soaking vessel 1 is loaded with, e.g. tropical, deciduous wood chips and may be exhausted by a pump &c. 4 prior to the addition of, e.g. 9 to 13% caustic soda solution from a tank 7, whereupon the vessel 1 is pressurized, e.g. to 100 p.s.i. by the pump 4, e.g. using air drawn through a washer 8 to remove carbon dioxide. After 1 hour, the charge may be left to soak at atmospheric pressure, before discharging with the aid of air in a bottle 12, the chips being then easily refinable. Detergents may be included in the soda solution. Evacuation and soaking may be repeated several times. The top of the vessel 1 may be conical to reduce the area of liquid surface exposed to any carbon dioxide in the air.
