900,626. Eddy-current brakes and couplings. COHEN, E., and ROTH, S. Dec. 9, 1958 [Dec. 10, 1957], No. 39634/58. Class 35. In an eddy-current brake and coupling the coupling comprises a rotatable shaft 8 carrying an inductor 24 coaxially within a hollow cylindrical stator 18 having a duct 19 between an end thereof and a recess housing a field winding 25 radially outwardly of the inductor 24, and two fans 17, 22 are provided one adjacent the stator end and the other at the opposite end of the coupling and brake. As shown, the coupling embodies a further winding 26 and inductor 24, and crenellations 24a on the inductors form when the windings are energized eddy currents in a rotor 27 connected to a drive-shaft 1, thereby coupling shafts 1 and 8. The brake comprises a crenellated inductor 28 keyed to the shaft 8, a field winding 30 in stator 29, and an element 31 rigid with the stator 29 and in which braking eddy currents are formed by rotation of the inductor. The fan 17 draws air in through an aperture 21 whence it passes through the duets 19, 20 to be discharged through an aperture 17a. The fan 22 impels air either through aperture 21 and the brake, to discharge at 23, or in the opposite direction. Bearings 3, 4, 7, 12 have lubricators 6, 10, 32.
