Abstract

A tablet to be chewed or dissolved in the mouth for the prevention of dental caries comprises an antacid, buffer and a water-soluble fluoride, the last being present in an amount not exceeding 0.01 grain and not more than 0.3% by weight of the tablet. The buffer and antacid are sources of magnesium and/or phosphate ions which are stated to synergize the anti-enzyme action of the fluoride. Suitable materials for use as buffers and antacids are magnesium hydroxide and carbonate and alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and ammonium phosphates. Preferably, a non-acid siliagogue, e.g. fruit-flavouring, NaCl or areca is present in addition to conventional non-acid tabletting excipients and flavours, e.g. cocoa. e.g. cellulose butyrate, propionate, acetobutyrate and aceto-propionate. Threads may be made of such filaments, or may contain up to one-third of the total number of filaments, of filaments of other cross-sectional shape. The filaments are made by extruding a spinning solution through a multi-orifice spinning nozzle (see Group IV (a)).
