900,375. Washing-machines. GENERAL MOTORS-HOLDEN'S PROPRIETARY Ltd. Nov. 3, 1960 [Nov. 3, 1959], No. 37791/60. Class 138 (2). A washing-machine has a manually-adjustable control whereby a cold water valve is either intermittently operated at a manually selectable rate to admit cold water for mixing with hot water for a warm wash or continuously operable to admit cold water for a cold wash. In the examples hot and cold water valves are actuated by solenoids 3 and 4 respectively controlled by a timer having a moving contact 2. An adjustable automatic intermittent switch 11 is associated with either or each of the solenoids 3 and/or 4, and means are provided for manually preselecting the final temperature of the water for both washing and rinsing. The arrangement may provide (i) a constant supply of hot or cold water, (ii) a constant supply of hot water plus an intermittent supply of cold, (iii) a constant supply of cold water plus intermittent hot, or (iv) an intermittent supply of both hot and cold water. The circuit shown in Fig. 2 provides cold, warm or hot water for washing and cold or warm water for rinsing. The temperature of the warm water is controlled by a cam (not shown) exerting a biasing action on the bimetallic element 11b of the intermittent switch 11. Setting of a preselector switch 6a to " warm " energizes a switch 9 which closes its contacts. Solenoid 3 is thus energized continuously (for hot water) through switch 9, and solenoid 4 is energized intermittently (for cold water) through switches 9 and 11.
