Abstract
1,232,779. Controlling washing machines. PELLERIN MILNOR CORP. 30 July, 1969 [5 May, 1969], No. 38258/69. Heading D1A. A machine for laundering fabric articles with a heated liquid includes a rotatable basket 10, a control system for automatically rotating the basket, introducing water at different temperatures into the basket and draining water from the bottom of the basket, and a timer adapted to initiate a training step after a first operation, such as washing, in which the basket contains heated water, wherein there are provided means in the control system for successively stopping the timer when the first operation is completed, slowly reducing the basket water temperature, and restarting the timer when the water temperature reaches a predetermined value. The machine is intended for "permanent press" fabrics which are impaired by rapid cooling. The machine further includes a plurality of axially divided compartments in the basket each with an access door 14 at one or other end, a main water inlet 15, a vernier valve-controlled water inlet 16 for use during slow cooling, a valve controlled water outlet 17 and an overflow outlet 18, two thermostats, HT and LT, and high and low voltage circuits. The high voltage circuit powers the motors and the timer, shown as a tape T which has conductive apertures and travels horizontally of Fig. 2. The low voltage circuit includes fingers 21 which co-operate with the apertures to complete selected circuits. In operation when the first operation is completed energising a HTS solenoid of a relay which closes contacts HTI to open the inlet 16 to cool the basket slowly and opens the contacts HT2 to stop the tape motor CM. When the temperature falls to that set on the thermostat HT the tape motor restarts, bleach or other supply is introduced to the basket if required under the control of a timer TDC, and the valve 16 is closed. Next the moving tape closes the solenoid ITS the relay of which stops the tape motor and re-opens the valve 16 to .cool the basket. When the temperature of the thermostat LT is reached the inlet 16 is closed and the tape motor re-started to complete its programme. A switch ML opens to close the inlet 16 if the water level becomes too high. In a modification a rotating cam is provided which intermittently opens a single main water inlet 15, instead of the low flow inlet 16.
