Flimsy records such as cheques having a first set of data in a predetermined area are converted into record cards suitable for use in statistical machines by being rendered substantially rigid and adjusted to the necessary dimensions, the same and/or further data being punched into another area of the card for sensing by brush, light sensitive or other reading means. The cheque, Fig. 1, is punched at 2 before being issued to the drawer to indicate the cheque number &c. When it is paid in and returned to the bank it is passed through a machine which applies a plastic sheet to one or both faces by means of heat and pressure. Alternatively, the cheque may be treated with a curable crease resistant resin or it may be made from a paper containing such a plastic. This plastic is cured by heat and pressure to stiffen the cheque. The cheque is then trimmed to the proper size, Fig. 5, or if it is smaller than a record card, the projecting edges of the plastic film are trimmed, Fig. 6. Further data 3 is punched to indicate the amount. The record is then passed through an interpreting machine and a translation of all the punched holes is printed in the bottom margin 4. The prepunched holes 2 are sensed photo-electrically and, if desired, the data may automatically be re-punched in the plasticized record for brush sensing. The data 2 may alternatively be represented in ink and sensed photo-electrically or magnetically.
