Abstract

A record card or sheet 1, Fig. 1, has tracks 2, 3, 4, in one of which, 3, a series of characters is recorded in a visually readable form, in another of which, 4, is recorded a mark 6 to be sensed by the machine in a position corresponding to the character represented and in the third of which, 2, is recorded a series of digit marks 5. The value of a mark 6 is determined by its position in the zone 7, the record being sensed in the direction of the arrow 46, a gate being opened by the mark 6 so that digit marks to the left of it can pass to a counter. The gate is reset by a mark counter when it reaches ten. Such a record strip may be attached adhesively to another document. In another form to reduce the length of the track required for each zone, two character tracks are provided one for the even numbers and one for the odd. The record marks are placed in one or other of the two tracks adjacent the two character tracks. In the form of Fig. 3 numbers are represented by marks 23 in track 21 as before but alphabetic and other characters are represented by such a mark 23 and in addition a mark 24 in track 22, this indicating which track of character tracks 26-29 contains the character represented. Thus in zone 32, mark 24 indicates that the character is in the first track 29 and mark 23 indicates that it is in the third position, i.e. " C." The marks may be recorded twice, one recording serving as a check on the other. One of the recordings may be in complement form so that if both are added during sensing a check is given when zero is produced. The marks may be recorded in magnetic ink by a specially formed printing wheel which is magnetized to polarize the marks during the printing; otherwise the marks may be magnetized subsequently. Other methods of recording may be used, e.g. ordinary marks to be sensed photo-electrically or radioactive marks sensed by a suitable detector. Data may be recorded in two independent methods in the same area of the record.
