Abstract

899,895. Radiation pyrometers. FOSTER INSTRUMENT CO. Ltd., and OUGHTON, H. G. March 6, 1961 [March 4, 1960], No. 7745/60. Class 40(3). In a radiation pyrometer thermal energy from a source is concentrated (by means such as a lens 3) on the first junction 5 of a thermocouple and the temperature of the second junction 6 is at the ambient temperature within the pyrometer, means being provided to adjust this ambient temperature to that of the first junction, the ambient temperature being measured (by means such as a second thermocouple 16 and an indicator or recorder 17) as an indication of the source temperature. The pyrometer may comprise a tube 2 in which a coil 13 for cooling water and an electric heating winding are interleaved and encompass the chamber containing the "hot" junction 5 and the "cold" junction 6. The e.m.f. between these two is sensed by a null detector and used to control a switch 12 which either opens a valve 14 to admit coolant to the coil 13 or passes current to the heating winding.
