[Also in Group XL (c)] In a pulse generator of the type in which a pulse-forming network N charges from a power supply A via inductors L1, L2 and discharges via a triggered switching device S, a protective device such as a diode D1 is made conductive by reverse or excess voltage across the reservoir capacitor C under fault conditions. The diode D1 may be replaced by a spark gap connected across inductor L1 or capacitor C. As shown, inductor L1 and capacitor C from a smoothing circuit for a rectified A.C. supply A. A pulse forming network N is charged via inductor L2 and diode D and is periodically discharged via a load R when the thyratron S is fired. The protective device D1 operates in the event of continuous conduction of the thyratron S.
