[Also in Groups XXVI and XXVII] A machine, having four units consisting of axially opposed cylinder-piston pairs 16, 17, Fig. 2, lying parallel to a crank-shaft 2 with an inclined crank-pin 11 comprises transmission structures 23, connected to the pistons by coupling means 30 and mounted entirely or partly by articulated connections 26, Fig. 3, on crank-pin bearings 21, 22, and which have flexible plates 32 secured to adjacent transmission structures so as to maintain axial rigidity whilst permitting transverse relative movement. The machine may be a steam engine, compression ignition or spark ignition engine or a pump. An axial clearance between the piston and transmission assembly and the crank-shaft webs 6 and 7 permits, in the ease of an engine, movement of the assembly towards an end cylinder bank containing a defective cylinder thus tending to restore balance between the respective banks of cylinders. Centralization before starting on the assembly between the crank-shaft webs is effected by the application of pressure fluid, e.g. compressed air or oil, through a pipe 49, Fig. 3, registering ports 38 and passages 40 into the appropriate space between a flange 35, fixed to the crank-pin, and a hollow casing 36 fixed in apertures formed in the shear-plates 32.
