Abstract
899,513. Forging. TEXTRON Inc. Dec. 11, 1959 [Dec. 19, 1958], No. 42169/59. Class 83 (4). A cupped metal article, Fig. 11, having an outer cylindrical flange 72 separated by a shoulder 73 from a cylindrical portion 74 is made from a solid workpiece 16, Fig. 1, of cylindrical shape by upsetting the workpiece in a die 40 to enlarge its diameter and form a shoulder 56 with a tapered portion 55 extending from the inner diameter of the shoulder to one end 54 thereof, and then in another die 60, driving a punch 70 into the opposite end of the workpiece to form a deep indentation therein. A starting workpiece is cut from bar stock 13 by a knife 14 and transferred to a die 15 at station 1 where it is chamfered at its forward end and slightly indented at the opposite end, Fig. 2 (not shown). The workpiece is then reversed end for end during transfer to station 2 where it is indented at both ends. At station 3 the workpiece is located during insertion into die 40 between spring-loaded ejector pins 45, 50 engaging within the indents at each end. The workpiece is then upset by punch 49. At station 4 the workpiece is further indented and upset by nose 71 on punch 70 and simultaneously a shallow recess is formed by a pin 66. The workpiece is finally pierced at station 5, whilst located between die 79 and punch 83, by a pin 86. A stripper 89 removes the workpiece from the punch 83. The punches 19, 31, 49, 70, 83 are carried by a reciprocating gate and ejectors 18, 28, 45, 66 are provided respectively at stations 1-4. In another embodiment, Figs. 12-19 (not shown), the final workpiece is unpierced. The article is used in particular as a push-rod seat.
