Abstract

<PICT:0899374/III/1> Wax is applied to paper or board wrapping material in sheet or web form by presenting the whole area of the material to a wax applicator following the application of a wax-repellent liquid to pre-determined areas of the material, whereby these areas remain uncoated by the wax. The wax-repellent liquid may comprise water and a wetting agent, e.g. a liquid or powdered detergent. It may be applied to pre-determined areas of, e.g. a carton blank by wipers of a liquid absorbent material, connected to a source of the repellent liquid, or by intaglio rollers, or a letterpress, aniline or gravure printing process. As shown, waxrepellent liquid is applied to the longitudinal edges of the blank, indicated at 27, by wipers 28, 29 of a material such as felt, to which the liquid is supplied from a tank, not shown, through pipes 32, 33 controlled by taps 34. The edges of the blank are passed respectively over and under stationary guides 23 and 24. The blank is forwarded by feed rollers, not shown, and then passes between a pair of rollers which apply molten wax to it. The wipers 28, 29 may be supported for selective movement into and out of engagement with the blank, and additional applying means may be provided if portions other than the edges are to have wax-repellent liquid applied thereto.
