Abstract

The filtration of slurries of alkali-metal cyanides, obtained by evaporating alkali-metal cyanide solutions, is improved by controlling the iron content of the solution so that the filter cake contains a maximum of 22 p.p.m. of iron, thereby reducing the water content of the filter cake obtained. The iron content may be controlled by using water which contains less than 1 p.p.m. of iron, or by employing stainless steel or non-ferrous equipment. The alkali metal cyanide solution may be obtained by reacting hydrogen cyanide and alkali-metal hydroxide in the presence of water.
