Abstract

1,257,521. Aqueous Al(NO 3 ) 3 . ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 10 Jan., 1969 [6 Feb., 1968], No. 1676/69. Heading C1A. Aluminium nitrate solutions of reduced iron content are produced from iron-containing clays by (a) digesting a clay at 140-220‹ C. under autogenous pressure, with nitric acid having a concentration of at least 10% by wt. in an amount at most 90% of that stoichiometrically required to convert all the aluminium in the clay to aluminium nitrate, the clay containing at least about 5% Fe by wt. (as Fe 2 O 3 per 100 parts Al 2 O 3 in the clay) to give a 10- 60% Al(NO 3 ) 3 solution and (b) cooling said solution, under autogenous pressure, at an average rate not greater than 25‹ C. per min. to the boiling point of the cooled solution under atmospheric pressure, the said period being not more than about 5 hours. The solution so treated may be filtered to remove Fe 2 O 3 and leave a solution having an Al 2 O 3 /Fe 2 O 3 ratio greater than 2000/1. Cooling may be carried out either externally or internally by the addition of water or an aqueous solution, the amount of water added being at most that required to reduce the concentration of aluminium nitrate in the cooled solution to about 25% by weight. Alumina may be obtained from the aluminium nitrate solution, e.g. by crystallization of aluminium nitrate nonahydrate followed by thermal decomposition. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,107,232.
