898,980. Making tubes. FROMSON, H. A. March 4, 1959 [March 5, 1958], No. 7537/59. Class 83 (2). In a method of making thin-walled metal tubes 100, Fig. 4, from thicker-walled extruded or rolled &c. tubing 1, Fig. 1, by collapsing the tubing to the form 10, Fig. 2, and rolling the flattened tubing 10 axially into a strip which may be stored in a coil or inflated or expanded to form the tube 100, the collapsed tubing 10 has opposite points 2 of reduced wall thickness, so that during rolling of the tubing 10, all parts above and beneath the slit 3 are under compression before the tubing is elongated beyond the maximum percentage elongation of the tube material. A formula giving the thickness 2 in terms of the maximum thickness of the tubing 1 is included. The aluminium &c. tube 1 may have an elliptical inner and/or outer surface, or it may be of polygonal or arcuate formation (Figs. 6 and 9, not shown). The bore of tube 1 may be treated with graphite or oil stop weld. Ribs 4 on the tube 100 may be avoided if the wall-thickness is equal to the thickness at the points 2. In a modification, Fig. 8, the points of reduced wall-thickness are produced by trimming with slitting rolls along the lines C-C of a collapsed tube 1<SP>11</SP> of uniform wall-thickness.
